Following the federal legalization of Canada in 2018 through the Cannabis Act, Prince Edward Island (PEI) introduced complementary legislation that regulate the cannabis market in its province: Cannabis Control Act and Cannabis Management Corporation Act.

The Prince Edward Island Cannabis Management Corporation (PEI Cannabis) is a Crown corporation which operates government-owned cannabis retail stores and an online platform. There are no private retailers in PEI.

The province’s laws establish that individuals aged 19 and above can possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis in public and there is no limit on possession in a private residence. Individuals aged 19 and above can also grow up to 4 cannabis plants per household as long as they are not visible from public spaces.

Prince Edward Island Cannabis Market Stats

PEI had $15.9 million worth of cannabis sales in 2020 which rose to $20.4 million in 2021 and then further to $22.1 million in 2022. In 2023, retail cannabis sales reached $23.4 million and then rose by 11.5% to $26.1 million in 2024.

PEI Cannabis currently operates five retail stores. The province’s stores have combined to sell around $130 million worth of legal cannabis since October 17, 2018.
